FAIRVIEW PARK — The competition pool at Fairview Park's recreation center opened for members Thursday morning, according to recreation director Tim Pinchek. The center's leisure pool is scheduled to be inspected by the state Department of Health Tuesday, he said. The leisure pool, which includes three lap lanes and a water slide, will open once it passes inspection.

WESTSHORE — Several area mayors have expressed concern about the effect proposed cuts in bus servcie will have on commuters. Westlake Mayor Dennis Clough, a member of RTA’s board of directors, urged riders who will be affected by the agency’s cuts to attend upcoming public hearings.
Fire hires planned despite challenge
BAY VILLAGE — The process has begun to hire two firefighters. One will fill a vacancy caused by a recent death in the department. The other will be an all-shifts floater to fill in for absent firefighters. This plan has not satisfied a citizens group unhappy with cuts to firefighters' overtime costs.
